ALEXANDRIA, Va.- President Barack Obama will be lending a hand in Virginia's fifth congressional district, traveling to Charlottesville on Friday to make a campaign appearance for fellow Democrat U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello.
The freshman incumbent is in a tight race with state lawmaker Sen.
Robert Hurt, R- Chatham. The two campaigns have been trading punches the past month, and if the race wasn’t wild enough with independent candidate Jeff Clark, the president is now paying a visit.

With 60 days until the elections, Virginia’s congressional campaigns are heating up.
While University of Virginia professor Larry Sabato released a prediction on Thursday that Republicans would gain 47 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, the status of Virginia’s close elections – the second, fifth, ninth, and 11th districts – did not change. The second and fifth are still toss-ups, and the ninth and 11th lean Democratic. But that doesn't mean the campaigns aren't creating any clamor.

In several close elections around the Commonwealth, independent candidates are causing a headache to Republicans who are challenging Democratic incumbents.
Republican candidates in the second and fifth Congressional districts,

Robert Hurt, both have independent candidates in their campaign. Both have tried to avoid debating the independents, and both their Democratic opponents, Reps.

Tom Perriello, have taken them to task for it.

The two candidates running for the 9th Congressional district seat in Virginia have found something they can agree on: the controversial Arizona law aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration.
U.S. Rep. Rick Boucher, the Democrat incumbent, and state Del. Morgan Griffith, the Republican challenger, both oppose the federal government’s decision to file a lawsuit against the state to prevent the law from taking effect.

Heading into the summer, political pundits and political wonks suggested the midterm elections this fall would prove a test for the strength of the Tea Party.
On the one hand, the anti-government movement seemed to have enough grassroots energy to decide the contested congressional races and swing the balance of power in Washington, D.C. One the other hand, the group seemed destined to splinter into various factions rather than unite behind a single message.
