Hunting groups push for Sunday hunting

In Virginia, even the animals get a day of rest. For now.
 
Hunters in the Commonwealth have been barred from hunting on Sundays since the days of John Smith and Pocahontas says Gov. Robert F. McDonnell. But the governor has promised to consider pushing legislation to lift some restrictions on Sunday hunting.
 
“I don’t know any of us remember it not being in place,” said Charlie Sledd, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries outreach director.

Virginia eyes illegal immigration battle

Gov. Robert F. McDonnell avoided taking a strong stand on Virginia’s future in the illegal immigration debate, but there were rumblings yesterday that could propel the Commonwealth to the center of the issue.

 


“I believe strongly we need to follow the rule of law,” the governor told WRVA radio in Richmond. “We need to do a much better job of securing the borders, but we need to permit lawful immigration in the United States consistent with the economic needs of our country … It’s too early to give any comment on what’s happening out there.”

Gov. McDonnell’s office lays out plan to sell liquor stores

The way Virginians buy their hard liquor may be changing in coming months. If Gov. Robert F. McDonnell has his way, the state will sell its rights to the hard booze business.
 
That’s the message Eric Finkbeiner, McDonnell’s point person on his privatization of state liquor stores push, shared Tuesday with the governor’s Commission on Government Reform and Restructuring during its second meeting in Richmond.

Traffic laws going into effect Thursday aim to make roads safer and more efficient for Virginia drivers, but whether both efficiency and safety can coexist remains to be seen.

State lawmakers this year approved laws to protect tow-truck drivers, highway workers, and minors, but the move to raise speed limits has some worried highways will be more dangerous.

Marijuana legislation down but not out

Marijuana advocates in The Old Dominion have found an unlikely ally in Del. Harvey B. Morgan, a bespectacled 79-year-old Republican.

This year the Gloucester County lawmaker introduced a bill that would decriminalize marijuana possession and a bill that would allow doctors to prescribe marijuana.
