Federal judge to rule on health insurance mandate by year’s end

The new federal health care reform law faced a major test on Monday in U.S. District Court in Richmond, as lawyers for Virginia argued against its constitutionality.
 
Judge Henry E. Hudson said he would have a decision by the end of the year, but acknowledged, “As you well know, this is only one brief stop on the way to the United States Supreme Court.”

Virginia employers look to hazy future in health care

ALEXANDRIA, Va.- When the federal Affordable Care Act was passed in March, it included 2,400 pages of legislative language that will change the way Americans get their health care. But many Virginia businesses are still trying to figure out exactly what it means.

Governor’s tweaked ABC plan less lucrative, more “business-friendly”

RICHMOND, Va.- Gov. Bob McDonnell’s plan to sell off Virginia’s monopoly of the hard liquor business cleared its first hurdle Thursday, though with several changes, and less revenue, than the plan that was first presented on Sept. 8.

The subcommittee tasked with readying a liquor privatization plan recommended the plan go to the full committee meeting of the Government Reform Commission  that will meet next week.

Lawmakers, state employees’ union consider 4 day workweek

Alexandria, Va.- State employees may soon be working four days a week to save money.

 
Gov. Bob McDonnell’s Government Reform and Restructuring Commission on Monday unanimously recommended that certain state agency employees switch to a four day workweek, where they work 10 hours a day. The three-day weekend could save money on energy costs and improve employee morale. Not all agencies are recommended for the change, particularly those involved with law-enforcement and education.

The issue of health care has the governor juggling his fight against the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the federal mandates that will be implemented in the coming months and years, and his agenda to put a personal stamp on the Commonwealth’s health care system.
