Arlington, Va.- Gov. Bob McDonnell and the Virginia Congressional delegation on Tuesday said jobs at the Joint Forces Command (JFCOM) in Hampton Roads will be preserved, after a meeting with Defense Secretary Robert Gates that morning.
After months of frustration at a lack of information from the Department of Defense, McDonnell and the delegation had a "civil, direct, frank" meeting, as the governor described it. While they did not get their request for the analysis and numbers behind the decisions to "decommission" JFCOM and cut support contractors by 30 percent in the next three years, they came out of the meeting feeling optimistic.

Thanksgiving is remembered as a time when Native Americans and the early European settlers celebrated their friendship with a feast – now, several Virginia tribes are asking for a return of the favor.
This time six tribes are going to the federal government to fight for recognition by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. They have already cleared one hurdle — passing a bill for recognition in the House of Representatives, but time is running out to pass the bill in the Senate.

As Republicans head to their statewide convention this weekend in McLean, the question everyone will be asking is who will be running against Democratic U.S. Sen.
Jim Webb in 2012 – and even if he will be running.
As the GOP huddles on Friday and Saturday at the Advance, four potential candidates will be selling themselves to the party leadership. On the Democratic side, Webb fares well for re-election, according to
Public Policy Polling released this week. But he has not said if he will be running.

WASHINGTON- Virginia's lawmakers on Tuesday were in Washington, D.C. demanding answers from the Department of Defense about the proposed closing of the Joint Forces Command on Tuesday.
At a hearing for the Senate Armed Services Committee, U.S. Sen. Jim Webb, D- Va., said Virginia’s congressional delegation had been kept in the dark about the DoD’s plans to shutter JFCOM in Hampton Roads and Norfolk.

The Chickahominy tribe even met John Smith, helping the early settlers grow corn. Now they are fighting to be recognized as an Indian tribe by the federal government.
